Living Prior to Perfection
For Sally #1
Sometimes, like now
I can not say a word
The brain shuts down
And numbness sets in
One wonders how life would be
After perfection comes
And there is no more
Homelessness
And we rid ourselves of the fear to ask our brothers
For a dime if we are in need
Because they’d just know...
They'd just know.
Pride is a dangerous thing
I often dream of the tiger
Riding me,
Just riding me
Can’t get that monkey off my back
Can’t make the connection
Between what I should be asking for
And what I ought be giving back
What I do know is that
Poverty is a motha
Will leave you teethless
Damn near speechless
Will rob you of your baby’s
Prom night out
The one she refused to attend
'Cause she had no new dress to wear
It creeps around yo house
Filling in the spaces
It becomes the shapes
It assumes the position
You mount it
You ride it
Then it rides you
And in the morning,
The apple-cinammon french toast morning
it finds you cozy in its arms
as you share a peanut butter and jelly
sam-mich together…
